Get Unstuck & Gain Clarity Amidst Change

Redefining Success on Your Own Terms

If you’ve ever felt like you’re chasing someone else’s definition of success, you’re not alone. Society loves to hand us pre-packaged dreams—career milestones, financial goals, a picture-perfect life—but when you find yourself in a new country, navigating uncertainty, those definitions often feel hollow.

As an expat, you have the unique opportunity to redefine what success, fulfilment, and purpose mean to you—not your family, not your colleagues, not society. It’s time to take ownership of your vision and craft a future that excites you.

I experienced this firsthand during one of the most challenging transitions of my life. In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, when overseas borders were closed, I gave birth to my child in Australia—just months after losing my father to pancreatic cancer in Brazil. I never had the chance to say goodbye.

While I anticipated that adjusting to new parenthood while grieving would be difficult, I was far less prepared for how challenging it would be to return to work after 26 weeks of parental leave.

I found myself thinking that it would be easier to quit and start fresh rather than navigate the emotional and professional complexities of returning. I felt guilty for not having said goodbye to my father. I felt guilty for leaving my child.

Before becoming a mother, I was completely career focused. After my child was born, I wanted to become the best version of myself—not just for my career, but to be a present and engaged mother.

My priorities had shifted, and yet I still felt an internal conflict. My old definition of success no longer fit the person I was becoming.

Many people remain stuck because they focus too much on the past and their current limitations. Instead, success comes from training your brain to think forward—to create a clear vision of the future you want and take intentional steps toward it.

For me, the pressure to perform at my previous levels while navigating new motherhood, grief, and sleep deprivation was overwhelming.

I was still breastfeeding, struggling with exhaustion, and feeling the effects of postpartum hormonal changes. Despite an extremely supportive team, I found it difficult to voice these struggles in a predominantly male workplace.

I felt like I had lost a part of myself, and I had no clarity on what success meant for me anymore.

I realised that my struggle wasn’t just about adjusting to work again—it was about redefining who I was and where I was going. Instead of dwelling on what I had lost, I had to shift my focus forward.

With the help of coaching, and honest conversations with my husband and people I love and trust, I began to let go of limiting beliefs and reshape my mindset. I wasn’t just returning to work; I was transitioning into a new version of myself.

What is your vision of the future you want? What are the limiting beliefs that are holding you back?

When life feels uncertain and everything around you is changing, it’s easy to feel lost—like you’re unsure of who you are, where you’re going, or if you even have what it takes.

Believe me, I’ve been there.

Having lived in different countries, started over from scratch more times than I can count, and seen myself through the lens of different cultures, I’ve had to redefine who I am and what I want—again and again.

The biggest game-changer? Learning to become my own biggest supporter. The more I embraced my own strength and potential, the more empowered I felt to navigate challenges, changes, and opportunities with confidence. The easier was to let go of limiting beliefs.
